No SweetAnnee:

Other hummingbirds do not gather and share any more than Ruby-throated Hummingbirds do. The photos you see of crowds of hummingbirds include as many Ruby-throated as they do other species. The difference is timing and the number of hummingbirds in the area. When, during migration, large numbers of hummingbirds gather at feeders, hummingbirds have undergone a physiological change that forces them to eat continually (this is the only time of year that they can accumulate fat regardless of how much they eat) and at the same time the feeder is overrun with birds so it is more efficient for them to eat than to chase other hummingbirds.
I live in Illinois ..we only get the Ruby Throated Hummers
check out http://www.rubythroat.org/ChecklistsUSStatesMain.html. Illinois has recorded four species of hummingbird, including some that are far more aggressive than Ruby-throated!

Re: WANT TO ATTRACT MORE HUMMING BIRDS

Do you live in Missouri.??

I live in Illinois ..we only get the Ruby Throated Hummers

and they are VERY territorial. The males will fight for his

feeder, even with the female and baby.

If I see more than one Ruby Throated , they are fighting.

You aren't doing anything wrong..it's the nature of the beast

Other hummers will gather and share. Get your feeders out

in April. (see the migratory map) so they don't pass you.

They come before blooms.except bulbs. The feeders attract them

Re: Hummingbird only takes nectar from certain flowers

Of course, I bought a red salvia sometime after this post was made, and she loves that too.

Re: HI

I am new to the group and live near Rochester MN. I have tons of hummers in the summertime. I love to lay in my hammock and watch the hummers feed in my backyard. They are so amusing to watch!

Re: HI

Hi Lori Rose, welcome aboard. I too love the hummingbirds; we get them around the first of April, depending on our weather here in New Haven, Indiana. Just love to sit on the deck and watch them feed. Get so excited when I see the first one. Did not have as many last year, maybe five or six. They sure keep us entertained!

When we lived in Tx I had lots of hummiing birds. All the time more during migration specially during the fall.

Here in Arkansas so many people feed them I get 3 every yr. In Tx they start showing up at my friends house about March 15th he said he is in Marble Falls area. By the end of March we should start seeing them here. I would love to have as many as I did when we lived in the Houston area. Our flowers bloomed late last yr no bees so I fed mostly bees. I would see a humming bird or 2 about dusk. This yr with all the snow and ice every body has had I don't know how gardens will do.

I am on face book as Jackie Popp if you want to add me as a friend

thanks for the note. And what's your name You don't really want me to call you frog pad do you?

Re: HI

This hummingbird is not there just because of the feeder and the person has done the right thing in leaving her feeder up. Feeders can not keep a bird from migrating or draw a bird from another area.

The Anna's Hummingbird routinely over winters as far north as Oregon and Washington states and is well equipped to handle the weather in Pennsylvania for the winter. The news media needs to do some research before they print. Anna's Hummingbird has previously been documented in both Ohio and New York (both of which border PA), as well as North Carolina, Georgia and Florida on the east coast.
