We have just redone the deck taking out most of the wood and most of the railings. The hot tub now rests on concrete (lots safer than 20 year old wood) but still have the gazebo with table and chairs for eating on wood with railings. Now have to clean and marine varnish all the wood remaining. Have tried all of the wood preparations over the years without any good luck. I figure marine varnish will do the trick for us. Any comments? Suggestions? Would love to send a picture but all my pics are on the computer and they won't fly here.

Hi brb4y,

I also would like to know what wood product works best.  We just finished a cedar low deck/patio and treated it with the recommended weatherproof sealant.  Water beads up on it, but it looks splotchy when dry.  The weatherproof product we put on our cedar siding did not work on the deck on the other side of the house, as it wears off when you walk on it.  If you use marine varnish would it prevent graying of the wood? Would it have to be done again at some point in time and how would the old stuff be taken off?

Hello everyone.

I am pretty much responsible for yard work and maintenance around our house, except the lawn, sons still do that.

We used treated lumber for both the deck and the fence and I wanted to leave them that natural colour.  So I used Thompson water sealant.  The advantage of that is that if I accidentally spray the brick or something else it doesn't harm the brick and it doesn't show.  I put cardboard on the patio door as it would make glass cloudy.

I probably have to redo the deck and fence about every three or four years.

But I use the pump spray type of thing that is usually used to spray insecticide on fruit trees sort of thing  -- I use a paint roller on the deck landing and stairs

We used Thompson's also. It's good for about a year and that's that. I've used marine varnish for many many years and it lasts almost forever. Must be applied carefully but, gee, if it protects boats in salt water.................

Have done inside furniture with it, outside furniture, outside wooden things and now we're doing the wood part of the deck. Using McKlosky's Man O' War brand put out by Valspar (I think) Used this brand before with great results.

I use marine teak oil, it lasts for years and when you want to freshen it up all you have to do is pressure wash and reapply.  It's the easiest stuff to use that I've found.

Robin, where do you find marine teak oil?  Do you use it on cedar boards or treated wood?  Does it change the color or is it clear?  Will it prevent wood from going gray?

I'm sorry for all the questions, but I have not heard of this and am looking for something easy.

It's from a company called Deft Oil.  I got it at Lee Valley.  The 'big boxes' don't carry it, Lee Valley has a web site and so does Deft (www.deftfinishes.com)

I used it on our cedar gazebo, and our pressure treated deck, the deck was already gray.  I pressure washed both, made sure they were dry then put the oil on.  The first coat was sucked right up, so an hour later I put on a second, then wiped off the excess (not much excess).  basically both the gazebo and the deck just look a little darker, as if they were wet. Which is about how the varnish looks, only the varnish is shiny, which I find to be slippery when it rains.

Hope that helps.

P.S that was almost 4 years ago, and I might have to do it again  next year, or the year after. I'm told its just a case of, make sure it's clean and dry then re-coat.  No sanding etc.!

Thank you for the web site. I put it on favorites for later since I'm out of time for today. We still have a gallon of marine varnish left over for other projects but will compare it with that one for later.

We are redoing the back bathroom. Now they work on  the weekends. Almost done. I have to tile the floor soon. Not look forward to that.

Robin,  I'm sorry I didn't come back to this thread and thank you for that information. Embarrassed

Back then, I was thoroughly confused, and forgot about my question!

I am thinking that teak oil would change the cedar color and make it too dark.  We went ahead and did another coat of the preservative Menard's recommended.

Well, since I am a widow , very indepent & fairly handy, having been raised in a family of contractors & carpenters that go back several generations I do quite a bit of DIY but nothing major.  Most of it is outside, such as landscaping, making fountains, trellises & things of that nature.  I just finished puting pavers under my swing in the back yard & filling in with gravel because all the rain this Spring/Summer kept that area damp & soggy.  In the Spring I am going to use the same type pavers to make a patio outside my back door.

Inside I just finshed painting almost every room in the house, putting a half wall of wallpaper in the bathrooms & borders in the master BR & the LR/DR area.  I had a sun porch put on the front of the house, I didn't do that but I designed it anf my brother & I designed this house, then he built it.

My favorite thing is figuring how to make something out of nothing.

This is how the pavers turned out under the swing.

And I had some left over so I decided to put them in front of my back door to keep it drier.  This is the same yard I just re-seeded.  You can't tell it here but it is already sprouting.  YAAYY.

cove nice job you did under your backdoor and I can almost see the sprouts , the pavers under your swing look neat . We put homemade pavers by the foot of our 3 step deck, my Dad make those yrs ago, funny how we keep things. they now came in handy when we move to this new house 6 yrs ago, we had the deck custom built, sorry now, story for another time.

I see you have gravel also a nice touch, dh put down lost count of how many 5# buckets under our picnic table, but need to do  something, an tired of the weeds coming thru, but I do  love to get my bare hands in the dirt,

I was dad's  go fur ' go 4 this , then go  4 that, learned lots , could even use a bench saw , story for another time, too, got to go    do lunch. think I found a nice place here too.

plumber was here few weeks ago, and we need to put in the plumbing in the  basement, for bathroom, , so when spring comes it will be done, and better for re-sale.. hoping to move then when real estate picks up,.

I thught they'd had to dig a lot further further, but not so,, he gave us a suggest t hat was most helpful, and where to put it, not my chose, but he said it be good spot cause everything would be ideal, for the pvc and etc. so i'm making up the design and I;ll do all the tile work myself, walls and floor , I done it before at the ole house in the shower.

now to pick out the fixtures is easy party, but the stud maybe dh is not wanting to do it, but hey i grew up a carpenter's daughter, but for his comfort level we'll get some one in. I could go crazy in the tile store, since  I have not been in this new one, oh happy days.

watch the gold come off this cc . Ha !  good inside project, this could lead to more projects.

I still have not tacked tile around my stove, yet,

any ideas or suggestions anyone, I hate to crack & waste while cutting, I know one of the stores can cut for me, but I want something nice. If I had planned on staying my selection would be different,. but going now to make it cost effective.

I can almost see the sprouts

Those sprouts are now 6" tall & I cut them today for the first time.  Filling in nicely & the spots that are still bare will fill in from this new growth I think.
