Look back at some of the previous posts and you'll see many use a homeade suet mix.Not sure what is in that commercial mix.Have you had birds this time of year before?It is the 1st day of spring!

If you send lots of photos you would be shocked at what high speed will do. I had a extra line put in when I had dial-up for very little extra.Of course I had 2 teens at home so they always had one or both tied up so I even had a 3rd put in.Happy Spring!

First Egg 2010/Trail Check

I checked my trail March 15th and had two complete nests. I checked it yesterday, March 19th and found 9 complete nests and 7 started. I checked the two nests that were started the 15th again today suspecting that I may find an egg and sure enough, it is my first of the season! They are 3 weeks late, but I am not surprised with the cold bad weather we've had.

AAWWWEEEE!!!! How adorable. I can't wait for my little mam blue to start. I think the nest is done now. Papa blue just perched himself in the Dogwood today as we did yard work and she would call to him and he would bring a bug every now and then, it was so precious to watch. Keep us updated on your trails!

Congratulations!!

It is so exciting and it makes you feel so important. I have a male and female putting grasses and guarding their box! I feel so special that they chose my box. I will be putting up another box after my husband puts up a trellis for my wisteria. I enjoy them flying around and watch them gather grasses. I put a pine tree branch beside the box, cause they use needles. It's like having new family members to take care of and enjoy! It is so uplifting, so I can feel you excitement!!

I am on dial-up connection and when I'm on the internet, it ties up the phone. So, until I decide to resolve that issue, it won't be online. I hate to get satelite, but may have to as looks like where I am there will never be DSL. Just gotta make up my mind to go on and do it.

Attracting Bluebirds

Earlier this afternoon, I checked my two Gilwood boxers. No signed of Mama Bluebird building nest in my two Gilowood Boxes. Nor, Signtings of Papa Bluebird monitoring the boxes for his new family.

Question: Do you think I should purchased some Robin and BlueBird Mix food to attract these love songbirds to my backyard.

Would appreciated any other suggestions and tips would be apprecuated.

Yes, it is what some call "claim straws" put there by Bluebirds. I'd say your chances are very good.

Hi Hilltoptulip: It is O.K. to check the box. In fact, you need to monitor the box. It is recommended weekly visits, but believe me, the ones in the yard get looked at more like daily! The Bluebirds are very tolerant. Yesterday, my husband had to adjust the camera in the nest box in the backyard and Ms. Blue was busy all day long working on her nest. He did the adjustment and she never missed a beat. I was watching her on the camera. It only took him a couple of minutes.

My Bluebirds are back!

Saw the first one today. He was on a fence posts, looking for food. He is gorgeous! Also heard a few the other day, but did not see one then.

I hope they nest in my yard again this year!

Yeah! Yeah! and Yeah! It feels like my birthday and Christmas all rolled into one day. I took the kids to school this morning and as I sit and write this now, mama blue is hard at work on making her nest. I am so happy I feel like I am going to burst!!

I have been praying for three years to get a pair to stay and it looks like my prayers have been answered. The weird part is that she chose another box to start the "real" work in. On our few acres, we have 6 birhouses and she had the one she put pines needles in yesterday, but today she is going in and out packing and stuffing pine needles and dried grass in a different one. I gues she liked it better. It gets morning sun and it is the box we set out last Fall so it has aged a little.

As long as they stay, I don't care which box they use. I am so happy to have them. My camera is going to get a workout this Spring for sure! I'll get the photos uploaded when I get some shots. Happy Bluebird Day to me!

I hope you get them too. I have my first pair starting a nest this year. This is so exciting! The weekend here is going to be in the 70's so I think it will be good nest making weather. Wishing all of you blues!

That is SO cool! We have a pair checking out our box, but every time I check nothing is in it. I am sure I would feel the same way, like super excited!!!

Update on my box

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!!

I was so excited last night a male came and perched and the female stood on top of my box with a huge amount of dead grasses. She went inside and put the grasses on the very edge of the box near the door. I actually looked inside it yesterday afternoon and saw about 5 strands of bird feathers or hair. Is that some kind of marking? Today the two birds were back, but didn't go near the box. I am awaiting their next visit! Just thought I would keep you updated. My husband doesn't care to much for birds, he actually is kind of scared of them when they flap their feathers and come near him. He gets a little ruffled from their ruffling feathers. But we were both so excited. I keep kidding him that I will get him hooked on birds yet. He got excited watching the birds eat this winter and now I think he will love to watch them nest. He is very protective of them. He told me not to mess with the box, but I peaked to show my kids. He got on me and said I really have to try hard not to peak. I am so enjoying this!

It seems the Blues here have other things to do than build a nest. I guess patience is needed.

I think those items are an indication that the pair are claiming the nestbox. The Bluebirds here aways sneak up on me and start a nest. You are lucky to be able to watch them....from inside. (?)

That is so funny about your husband being scared of birds.LOL! It sounds like he has become a full fledged bird watcher....in spite of his fears. hehehe

OK guys, those of you that know my story might understand this question, but for those of you who do not, I am wondering if this is the makings of a bluebird nest. I had college classes this morning and put out about 50 mealies or so, just in case they came to see me while I was gone. After school, I came home and found my blue boy and girl perched in the Dogwood and it looked like they had just been in the birdbath. I watched them from the kitchen window for about an hour and I had to go get the kids from school. We had errands to run and I had dinner to prepare when I got home, so I was busy and not able to watch much. My son told me he saw the bluebird on top of the birdhouse &he saw him go into it. I went out to look and see and lo and behold I found this.....

So my question is, is this the work of a bluebird or no? I know it is not much, but I am positive it was done today. My husband cleaned these boxes and did the ivory soap trick just yesterday. I know they usepine straw so I got excited. It started to rain at about 5:00 and they stayed mainly in the Dogwood. I will be watching like a hawk in the morning. I just hope and pray it is what I want it to be. It would be a first to have the bluebirds stay and nest with us.
