I brought in 2 mandevilles from outside when it started getting chilly at night. Cut both of them back but did not re-pot either of them. They didn't look like they needed it. Although not in the same window they are both on the same side of the house so same light, temp & water regimen. One is doing great, already putting out new growth. The other just dried up & died. The leaves got so dry they all turned almost brittle & fell off. I put the pot out in the garage just in case it decides to make a comeback but I doubt it. Why would one flourish & the other die with identical conditions?
The only thing I can think of is the one that died was overwatered. I have two hanging baskets of mandevilla that have been in the same pots for 3 years. Slow release in the spring, water in the summer is all they have had. They grow all over the gazebo in the summer, I cut them off when I take them into the greenhouse for the winter. They usually end up dropping most of the leaves due to the change of light in the winter but they come right back when spring comes. I don't water them much in the winter, once they start putting out new leaves I start watering more. Maybe someone else has a better idea why one would die and the other one would thrive.
You've got me stumped. I have had that happen before and I guess I just usually try to be optomistic...at least they didn't both die. Maybe the other one will come back. Charlene

I have no idea either but maybe it will come back out. I brought mine in (it hadn't done very well from overwintering last year, just a stick and barely grew, so I didn't cut it back, just brought it in, well its not growing so much I'll come home and its wrapped itself around the pull string for my mini blind. LOL Its a houseplant kind of mandevilla I guess. LOL

Okay, so dry heat isn't the culprit, now ....................... Molly mentioned to much water? A possibility.
sorry about your Mandeville, I have one and pruned it back and brought it in (front porch) no heat just alot of light....so far all the leaves dried up and fell off and then it is resprouting so hope yours makes it too mine is pink.......first experience with it........

I decided to give this plant another chance. I cut it back to about 3 inches, re-potted it & brought it back in the house. It is pitiful looking & people will probably want to know why I have a dead plant in the house, but we'll see what happens. Maybe it will revive. The soil in the old pot did seem a little too wet so maybe that was it.
Sometimes things happen and we really don't know the reason for it. Maybe it just wanted some new soil, maybe it was just taking a break. Mine lose leaves in the winter too but they come right back out in the spring. I hope yours does that too.
