New here----Please tell me how to discourage them from building nests on my porches, eaves--everywhere. I tried putting up a play snake (they used that to ride on), cussed them, sprayed with insectide, and have had the best luch with amonia sprayed on them---but that doesn't last. I AM DESPERATE!!

These are barn swallows...or mud swallows. And yes, they are messy. I've had most luck by using a hose with a power nozzle on it. You can get the power nozzles at most any good hardware store for a few bucks. I just spray the nest away...and keep spraying it away. After awhile, the birds get discouraged and leave. It does take a few days...they need to nest right now though, so if you keep destroying the nest...they will go somewhere else to build. Good luck

Thanks, MontanaJan for information. I have a new pressure washer that I only just used today-guess it will get good workout, But, after fighting these pesky birds-I do not think that would work unless I did it every 30 minutes-LOL. I live out and by a creek---and I guess they like living out here too. They are so messy---and I have a yellow and white house. I heard somewhere that wasps, etc. would not build under a porch or eaves if they were painted blue. Does anyone know if this is true?

We battled those birds last year, finally hung up some tinfoil. I've heard that hanging a shiny CD will also scare them off. I hope they don't come back this year.Good luck. They are persistent.

We have trouble with them too, Can't leave the shop doors open because they try to build their nests on the rafters. They eat an incredible amount of mosquitos every day tho' so am glad when they find somewhere else to build near us.

What about trying a big ole glob of vaseline? worth a try, it wasn't on your list of things you did.

My father-in-law put up chicken wire in the areas that the swallows tried to use for nesting sites. Worked for him.
