In today's newspaper it said JC Penney's are struggling as far as influx of shoppers goes they have reported.
Walmart's are doing well in large stores; not so good in smaller ones. Of course, it made mention that Walmart's are where poor people shop. I didn't think that was in good taste at all, but that is what was printed in paper. I know many people that shop discount stores such as Walmart, K-Mart, Target, Dollar General, etc. and they are not considered poor either. They just want more for their dollar. Why should I pay top dollar at some grocery store or well known pharmacy or department store for name brand products to clean my bathroom, i.e., cleanser, toilet bowl cleaner, room spray or disinsfectant wipes when I can get the exact same known brands at cheaper/discount prices at discount stores?
I do think Penney's is high today and we receive sale flyers every week in our newspaper so you know they are needing customers.
I just don't think it is proper to distinguish rich from poor depending on which stores a person chooses to shop in. I think that is cruel tactics on the part of any store. JMO
Let every day be a good day!
I got a letter from Penney's saying they were uping the interest rate on my card to 29.?, my first thought was to send them a letter back and tell them to cancel my card. I rarely use it. If they want customers, charging them more interest is not how you do it.
It certainly is not the way to get customers! Isn't 29% terrible?
I guess I would be considered poor cause I shop at all the stores mentioned.
Our Penney store moved out, not much left in our town except for Walmart that does very well, a mall that's dying and a K-Mart that doesn't do very well.
I agree with you Posy. It's a shame to use the poor/rich aspect by retailers.
Marketing is so strong for brand name items and glorified that they divide the public. What I find offensive is how they price their items. You have to pay a high price for their names. What is ironic, is that most of the items are made in China and passed on with the fancy name. Such as it is now with almost everything.
I am not a Wal Mart shopper, but I do like to get small items now and then.
Perhaps it's only the poor in some areas who shop at those stores, but not here. This made me think of a millionaire's wife I know of through a relative who shops at one of the Walmarts we frequent.
A few weeks ago DH and I were in Sears on a weeknight. It was like a ghost town. We were almost the only customers in the store! I've always found K-mart to have fewer shoppers than Walmart.
I don't think the recession is over by any means.
My BFF worked in a distribution center where she had to price tag items and then send them to the stores. When the Michael Jackson glove was big she tagged them. The gloves going to the high end stores were tagged with a higher price than the gloves going to the WalMarts, Targets, and other bargain stores, yet they all came out of the same shipping box, as did alot of other things. I say save it where you can.

When Pennys went to mostly clothes, and cutzy Junk,, I stopped shopping thier..
I refuse to go into Sears.. hence,, K-Mart is out ,,,
I don't like Target,, and really don't care for Walmart, but do get some stuff there..For Groceries I go to Either Kroger, or Martins,,However since Martins has started Pushing the Spartan Brand, I don't buy as much..Hardware is mostly a Local ACE, or Menards..
Lowes and Home Depote are just layed out wrong..JMO.
I seldom shop Penney's. I don't care for their prices or their clothing. I almost never find anything I like there, so I don't go. I do LOVE their sheets and some of their drapery. Those I buy very infrequently, so I am no help to them at all.
Everyone here shops WalMart and Dollar General and Big Lots, from the poorest to the MDs and Lawyers. I see them in there all the time.. I doubt they buy clothing there, but I know they do buy most everything else in there!
Last month I was in Big Lots looking for some cheap photo frames and saw one of our local orthopaedic surgeons. If he is poor, I hate to know what that makes me.
Loosenut, so where do you shop? Doesn't seem to be much left except locally owned stores, which would be great but I would think you would have to go all over to find what you need.
Loosenut, wondering where you do shop, if you have excluded so many of the stores in the list, after all, if you can save a dollar in one store, and spend in another, aren't you about even?
I shop wherever, whenever, I don't make special trips to go to any store, if I am in what I call the city, shopping, I hit whatever I have time for, even the resales, and am not ashamed to say I shop there, if I hadn't all these many years, I wouldn't have what I do today.
Further, after an item has been washed, it is used, so there, what difference does it make how many times it has been washed, it is still used. So, whether it comes from a high end shop, or the resale, same to me. Lots more than clothing to be found there as well.
I feel sorry for you, not much choice left for you to shop anywhere can see you are a frugal person, as a lot of us are, nothing to be ashamed of.
Warmest wishes from Central Wisconsin,

Drapes at Penney's are okay, but the last sheets from there I did not like. All cotton and a wrinkled mess when they come out of dryer. I like the blends for sheets and they never wrinkle when dried in dryer. When my kids were little I bought a lot of their clothes there, but now their clothes are expensive. They are no longer a reasonable store for anything like they used to be. K-Mart here I get towels, bathmats, housewares. I have trouble getting jeans from there to fit. Their jeans seem to run smaller than what the tag says so I always buy one size larger to be sure they will fit. Most of my clothes I order from Lands End or LL Bean and they have free shipping lots of times, too.
We don't have a lot here to shop at, but shop local stores when I can. I do miss Ames and lots others do I have talked to. They had a nice selection of yarn, material and sewing stuff. Used to get my sweatsuits there and other things, plus household stuff. They seemed to have lots of stuff these other big lot stores don't carry.
I have a Penney's card I never use. Same with Sears. Interest on those cards are way overpriced. I have one charge card and I use that one at K-Mart and any other dept. store I go if I want to charge anything. I should cut up the store charge cards as I never use them.
To answer " where do I shop/"..
I don't do a Lot of shopping,,, Thankfully ,,My DW and I have almost everything we need,,, and really don't want a lot of "things".
My DW buys some things on Line,,,clothes..mostly.. as for groceries I shop mainly at Martins or Krogers...Prescriptions are from Walgreens,,,Gas is purchased at the corner 7-11, mostly because of the people working there...I buy Feed for the critters at a Local Feed store,,and what tools or building supplies are from Menards,,,We don't eat out very often because I enjoy cooking,I buy my Spices from Penzeys.,and it is very difficult not to be critical of Fast food or resteruant cooking it seems to all taste the same..My clothes I buy from a Local Big and Tall store...because they have the sizes I need and will alter If needed,,( so My DW doesen't have to... ( I Short and fat,,)..and If I need shoes (actually boots) I have to special order,,We do NOT like to go to Malls,, however we do like to Antique,,and travel to "shows" quite a bit.. we were in Mount Vernon,, and Lancaster ,,Ohio Last week end,, had a very nice time,,
I shop too at stores mentioned except penneys, too high for me! walmart aknowledges other grocery advertisements prices and I use them alot, every penny counts these days! Mary in Ky,10.56am
