Ok so winter is here and here in colorado i cant go out very often so i came up with a fun way to grow plants through the winter. You will need a few things before you get started:
Scissors
a small CLEAR container(3 or 4 inches tall)
a sealable sandwitch baggie
water
Whatever seeds you want to grow
And a DIAPER(unused obvyously haha)
Cut open the center of the diaper and you should find a bunch of cotton. Take some cotton out and put it in the baggie. Shake this for about a min. You should notice a material seperating out that looks like sugar or salt. DON'T eat this! it is a polymer that absorbs extreme amounts of water. Do this till you get most of the "sugar" out of the diaper. Place a thin(ish) layer of this across the bottom of your container. Slowly fill the container with water. Plant your seeds, place in a window and watch it grow. The polymer will not need to be watered for quite some time but when it runs out of water it will revert back to a powder.(dont let that happen) Good Luck!!!!!
I LOVE experiments. I have a container of that powdery stuff that someone gave me. They had me make them a couple of sweat bands with it and told me to keep what I didn't use. I never thought of trying to grow seeds in it, but you can bet I will now. Have you actually tried this? If so, how did it work? Charlene
I aint sure if I have any 'diapers' left.
How would the puppy training pads work? Or there is a pad for one cat litter pan tha you put the pad in a seperate tray & there are an absorbant pellet that goes in the actual litter pan.(my cats didn't like it).
I think I may have a couple of the cat pads & some puppy pads. would they work?
Should the container have a lid?
sorry about all the questions
I am in the process of a few experiments with this including morning glorys and pomigranets. I will post pictures of the developments.
Im not sure if you can use puppy or cat pads but hey its an experiment so just cut em open and see what you find, and i have a lid on one of my experiments and it just makes it so i dont need to water as much.
Sounds interesting. I use the little containers of the 'crystals' that come in my meds. Instead of the plastic peanuts I use them in the bottom. Works good for me!
Bugman--Our local grocery store will sell prepared fresh fruit in a tall clear container -- I usually buy cut up fresh pineaplle in this kind of container & thought that would work--so I guess we will all be experimenting & posting pics
Thanks for the project, I'll wait until it gets colder in my are, pretty soon I'll have lots and lots of pruning. Now I have to figure it out where or from whom I'll get a diaper..ha ha.. I'll might have some explaining to do...they might think this request rather suspicious... Please tell me what do you do when the seeds sprout (?), move them to real dirt ?? Where did you get this experiment ??
Everyone is so inventive............. I love trying new things........ I have a new great niece, maybe I can get one of her diapers.....unused of course
Thanks for the great ideas........

Or instead of playing around with diapers just go to your local nursery and buy the pellets in a bag.

What would you ask for at the store??? Replacement diaper stuff??? seriously...
OT--Bugman referred to the 'stuff' as polymer. Is that what you would ask for?
Just ask for the water retention product for hanging baskets that they have been selling for years.
