OK guys, first I have to tell you that I had to rotate this photo. It is actually upside down right now. I saw this little guy hanging upside down in a pine tree singing away. He has a brown head and yellow "touches" all over. It is hard to tell in this light but he was very pretty. I took this photo on a morning walk with my husband. It was around 10:30 when we hit the walking trail and I kept hearing this bird. I am stumped. HELP! I have never seen one like this before. I am in Greenville SC in Zone 7.

"Birds are born to have wings; wings are symbols of freedom."
I'm pretty sure that this is a "butter butt"...a.k.a. yellow-rumped warbler...the eye ring and the tail are good field marks.
Love your picture....
This is one of my favorite birds...as a teen I used to watch them by the hour(yes, I was an odd one!)...There were many of them at a river where I often fished...so if the fish weren't biting...and even if they were...I would be watching the birds.
narnian - - - Could be, but I think it is too yellow underneath to be a YRW. Unless it is because of the light causing it to be yellow. And the eye ring on a YRW and PW are almost identical in "winter" plumage.
Oh my that IS the face of a YRW if I ever saw one. Same as this one. They are all over here right now and are also a very vocal little bird. They are so cute and pudgy...I just love them!!
Thanks for the help guys. I think it is a YRW. They were at the trail again this morning and I saw the yellow on the rump today. Maybe it is a juvie? The Fall plumage and color changes always throw me off. Thanks for the help :-)
Beautiful picture . I guess I will have to come to SC and bird watch...........
My brother lives just outside of Anderson, and my niece works in Greenville.......... small world............

My vote is YR Warbler, I don't think the Pine is streaked like that.
And if you are seeing lots of them, thats even more a case for Yellow Rumps....they are the most plentiful warblers in the South this time of year.
a passer by perhaps and like alot of bird a the males lose color for the winter but thebird is beautiful he closely resembles the wax wing because of coloring
