This started coming up about 3-4 wks. ago & is currently about 5 in. tall.  I have planted several things in this area in the past but nothing recently as it's a poor area of the yard.  Could it be a hardy hibiscus?  Doesn't look quite right for that though.

Gayle, I have looked at your photo for two days, now, but just can't seem to id this.  There are different types of hibiscus, but it seems too late in the season for them to start growing, even in your area.  The stem looks woody, so this may be a sucker coming up from a nearby shrub or tree - that may be one of the first places to start for id'ing it.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Joan

Yeah I guess I'll just wait & see.  Nearest tree is a Hickory (not that) & nearest shrub is a rose (not that)  The leaves kind of remind me of a type of saliva.

Since it's tall and  the leave SURELY do resemble a coneflower of some sort.  They grow in poor soil.   I have over 20 different coneflowers and this surely looks like one to me!

Sorry Rocky, don't know of any pecan trees in this part of the country, but it'll turn out to be something.  I'll let you know what.

The leaves look a lot like my Lantana leaves.

hi,  to me this plant looks like it could be a veronica(speedwell) or chelone (turtlehead) do you have either planted else where in your yard.  Birds can carry the seed of both and and they will restart else where.

I do have a variery of Speedwell & that's what I was thinking when I first saw it.  If that is what it is, it is the best looking one of the whole bunch.

It won't bloom this first year but it should bloom the next.  If it has spikes flowers in mid-summer then that is what it is.  The birds carry them around in my flower garden all the time and that is what mine look like.  The have a medium blue flower the next year. So hopefully that is what yours will be.
